Our organization

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with over 1.7 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. Based on the founding principles of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity, the Order was founded in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut, by Father Michael J. McGivney.

Local history

Our San Jose Council was formed in 1886, as the 14th brotherhood of Knights. Our members come from the Willimantic parishes of the Corpus Christi Community: St. Joseph Church, St. Mary's Church, and Sagrado Corazon. We are proud of our long heritage of service in our local community, and look to continue that tradition into our 129th year and beyond.

What we do

We support our 3 parishes and local community by giving freely of our time and talent in a variety of charitable avenues. Whether by lending a hand at special Masses, participating in a local food or clothing drive, or organizing youth events like Free Throw and Soccer competitions, the Knights have a positive impact on our community, both inside and outside our Church.

Our council meets for discussion and planning on the second Tuesday of each month in the old St. Joseph School building on 21 Valley Street in Willimantic. We typically begin at 7:00 PM sharp. If you are curious about what the Knights are about, you can attend a meeting as a guest; simply contact us.

Why Join?

If you've ever wanted to get more involved in your parish and reach out to help others, the Knights may be the group for you. As a member, you'll be right alongside other hard-working men who want to make a difference.

Beyond charitable opportunities, as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you and your family enjoy many benefits, including 12 free issues annually of Columbia magazine, the world's largest Catholic family magazine, eligibility to join the Knights of Columbus top-ranked life insurance program, and many more family and personal benefits.

How to Join

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. You can register online and our local council will reach out to you, or paper application forms are available in the front of our local Churches, which you can fill out and submit. You can always contact us directly for help.

Once your application is submitted, new members are scheduled to receive the First Degree, an initiation ceremony marking your entrance into the Order. The ceremony is educational, and explains our principle of Charity to the prospective Knight. Soon after, additional opportunities for a Second and Third Degree become available, in which the new Knight will experience and learn about our principles of Unity and Fraternity. Third Degree Knights are eligible to serve as officers of their council.
